The Department of Social Anthropology and History of the University of the Aegean focuses on the interdisciplinary study of social, historical, and cultural aspects of human action. The Department organizes its teaching, educational, and research activities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels on this basis.
The Department of Social Anthropology and History offers a state of the art program on key areas which are presupposed for a solid understanding of social and cultural phenomena in Greece, Europe, and the world at large. Overall, the Department’s undergraduate program offers about eighty-five courses, on a four-year basis, covering a wide spectrum of subfields in Social Anthropology and History as well as other fields of the social sciences and the humanities.
Graduate Study Programs are inextricably connected with the profile of Department of Social Anthropology and History since its establishment, in 1987-88. Today the Department organizes and runs three interdisciplinary graduate programs awarding Master’s degrees, each with its own profile.Students also have the opportunity to work towards a PhD degree in all fields represented in the Department.
The Department’s academic staff includes historians, social anthropologists, and scholars in other disciplines of the social sciences and the humanities.
The Department’s activities are supported by members of the specialized technical staff and the Secretariat.
The academic staff of the Department of Social Anthropology and History is renowned for interdisciplinary scholarly work carried out both in the form of autonomous research and in the frame of funded research programs. Research in the Department is supported by four research labs. The Labs of Social History, Ethnography, and Family and Kinship were founded in 2000, and the Lab for Ethnographic Approaches to the Study of Language was chartered in 2016.
